Lead Operator Water Department
Job Description / Position Summary
C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Operator for our Water and Sewer department. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment while leading and supporting crew operations on underground utility projects. The ideal candidate will have strong experience laying water mains, reading grades and blueprints, and working in various environments including city streets and uneven terrain. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
· Operate heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, skid steers, and other machinery safely and efficiently
· Perform excavation work in both city street and rural environments while maintaining full awareness of surroundings
· Read and interpret grades, blueprints, and job specifications
· Demonstrate strong knowledge of pipeline construction and maintenance techniques
· Perform trenching, earthmoving, and compaction work in accordance with project requirements
· Safely excavate around existing utilities while maintaining a high level of caution and awareness
· Install and connect PVC and ductile iron piping ranging from 2 inch to 24 inch and larger as required
· Lead by example in productivity, safety, and quality standards on job sites
· Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors regarding job progress and site conditions
· Work independently and as part of a crew to meet project goals
· Operate equipment safely around personnel and underground utilities
· Maintain a strong work ethic and commitment to safety, quality, and production
· Work in all weather conditions and varying terrain including uneven and muddy environments
Qualifications
· Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Lead Operator laying water mains required
· Experience digging in trench boxes required
· High school diploma or GED preferred
· CDL license preferred
· Must pass and maintain all required operator qualifications and testing
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Strong working knowledge of grades, blueprints, and underground utility construction
· Knowledge of underground utilities and locator markings
· Ability to safely operate heavy equipment around personnel and existing infrastructure
· Strong decision-making skills in high-pressure situations
· Ability to lead and work effectively within a crew environment
· Strong communication skills and dependable work ethic
Employment Requirements
· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
· Must provide documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility in accordance with federal I-9 requirements
· Ability to pass pre-employment screenings including drug test, MVR, and background check
· MVR must meet company fleet vehicle policy requirements
· Willingness to travel and work in different areas as needed
· Commitment to following all safety policies and procedures
· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor
· Ability to work overtime and extended hours based on workload
· Must be at least 18 years of age
Physical Requirements
· Ability to perform physically demanding labor including lifting, bending, and climbing
· Frequent standing, walking, and operating heavy equipment for extended periods
· Ability to work in trench conditions and confined work areas
· Capability to work in demanding outdoor construction environments
Work Environment
· Outdoor construction job sites in varying weather conditions
· Work performed in city streets, rural areas, and active construction zones
· Exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, noise, and uneven terrain
· Fast-paced environment requiring constant awareness of safety hazards
Schedule / Travel Requirements
· Full-time position
· Typical work weeks range from 40 to 60 hours depending on project demands
· Weekend work and emergency work may be required
· Travel required based on job location
